fedora hat style

Whether it's on a fashion runway, Hollywood cinema or just walking around in public, the iconic fedora-style hat continues to turn heads wherever spotted.

The fedora, characterized by a pinched front and a wide, pliable brim, has evolved over the years to include various lengths and materials.

Fedora shopper Matt Worthington, 24, said he admires the hat for both its style and the tradition it represents, especially when it comes to his family.

“My brother and I come from a Latino family and I think there's a lot of pride in dressing a certain way,” Worthington said.

“You go to a family reunion and you see many elders in our family who dress like this.”

While it is widely considered a fashion staple among both males and females, men are responsible for starting the storied trend.

The fedora stepped into the forefront of male fashion in the 1890s, heralded for its stylishness, and its ability to protect the wearer's head from wind or harsher weather. In the 1930s and 1940s, wearing a hat was common, with gangsters, bankers, and business men wearing fedoras.

“If you lived back then you wore a hat regardless,” said Joe Vidal, a sales representative at Penner's Men's Store, which sells a wide variety of hats. “That was the style.”

While President John F. Kennedy is sometimes blamed for killing the hat business in the 1960s for not wearing a hat, a major upswing has taken place in the last 30-years.

Hollywood's role in keeping fedoras in-style include actors Gene Kelly in “Singing in the Rain,” Humphry Bogart in “Casablanca,” and John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd in “The Blues Brothers.”

Fedora Hats Are Rarely Sexy 93

Gawd, can we please put the Fedora back in the 40’s where they belong? The odds are very much against your looking sexy in one of these. They come in a ton of styles, and maybe 2 look good – and I’m not telling you which, cos I don’t want to encourage you to run out and get one!

The truth is, 99% of all white men look ridiculous in these. And I do mean ridiculous. We’re talking the equivalent sex appeal of maybe Ed Norton from The Honeymooners. Sorry, I’m not trying to be racist, or anything, they just usually don’t look right on whitey.

They sometimes look good on black men, but only those who can really pull off the well-dressed gangster look, or old blues musicians. And the men these look the best on – Cubans and other Latinos – don’t always look sexy in them, either. Take a look at the following Hollywood celebs and tell me if you really think these hats look good!

Fedora Hat - The History & Origin

By Roger Banbury

The Fedora is most commonly known as a gangster hat, a hat which saw such widespread use and particular popularity amongst infamous prohibition-era gangsters such as Al Capone and Bugsy Siegal that it will be forever more associated with them.

With the distinctive front pinch and wide, floppy and pliable rim the fedora is a distinctive hat indeed. The actual name 'Fedora' came about due to a stage play which was running in 1882. The main character, Princess Fedora Romazova, wore a hat just like it, thus it became known as a Fedora.

Another variation of the fedora is the trilby, a hat very similar although it has a less ostentatious and less menacing look about it due to the narrower rim. Such stars as Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears have worn a trilby before.

Although you are much less likely to see young high-profile gangsters wearing a fedora hat these days they still do hold much popularity among older people, but this isn't to say the fedora is a hat for the old. Many young stars still wear the fedora hat and trilby hat. Run DMC are one example of how fedora hats are still seen as 'urban cool', and they look anything but ridiculous. My guess is it is only a matter of time before we again see a huge resurgence in popularity for this hat, and the sight of younger generations walking down the street sporting a fedora as commonplace, yet the epitome of chic.
